The East London Photography Festival
October/November 2007
photomonth has grown into an international photography festival with over 80 exhibitions and events in 50 galleries and spaces in the East End of London.
Shoot photomonth launches the festival which opens on 2 October with the first photo-open at the Art Pavilion giving the opportunity to see emerging new talent, Acclaimed photographer Stephen Gill conducts photo-tours around Hackney Wick, Anna Fox delivers the photomonth lecture and portfolio reviews take place over 2 days at the Whitechapel. The photomonth seminar 'Photographing the East End' is at the Rich Mix and features the work of seminal street photographer Paul Trevor.
photomonth demonstrates the diversity of contemporary photography. Magnum and Camera Press celebrate their 60 years with special shows featuring famous photographers they represent from Martin Parr to Mary McCartney. The all new Rivington Place opens with the work of Dinu Li, Amnesty International present their Media Awards and Host Gallery reveals the latest work by Chris Steele-Perkins. Emerging photographers Ned Dyke-Coomes and Mauro Bottaro show at the Indo Bar and Mohiuddin Siddique exhibits images of the cinema banner painters in Bangladesh in his shop off Brick Lane. Co-inciding with photomonth the Sandblast Festival has panoramic pinhole photography of the Western Sahara at St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, and David Hoffman,
Phil Maxwell and Colin O'Brien show their valuable archives. Exhibitions reveal large scale installations, constructed images, elderly East Enders from the Somali, Bengali, Jewish and Caribbean communities, Eastern European immigration, the Palestinian Occupied Territories, phrenology, controversial sexual imagery and hybrid cultures.
This year photomonth goes global, creating links with photography festivals around the world. Special guest Emily McInnes, creative Development Director from CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival will join a distinguished panel of critics, curators and publishers for the portfolio reviews. With an International line-up of established and emerging photographers, photomonth offers a comprehensive programme of talks and events designed to promote interest and participation in contemporary photography and focus attention on the changing face of East London.
